This Friday, my wonderful friend Shannon Harvey from Place is hosting her annual charity event; The Bulimba Fashion Festival. As my title may have given away, it is in Bulimba (KRudd’s electorate in Brisbane), there is fashion and this year, Shannon is aiming to raise over $30,000 to help inspire young women via the YWCA’s Y Bloom Program.
Y Bloom is a unique mentoring program aimed at fourteen year-old girls who show potential as leaders but are seen to be unlikely to achieve this without a bit of extra help. Sometimes this can be because of unsupportive adults in their lives, socio-economic factors or simply the perception that they are somehow ‘different’ or ‘not up to it’.
The program is presented in a series of ten weekly workshops, including several sessions focused on circus skills as a means for learning about teams and trust, and developing self confidence – FUN!
A key element in the program’s success is the involvement of mentors – inspiring women drawn from the local community who participate as positive role models and facilitators.
This is the fourth year Shannon has hosted The Bulimba Fashion Festival which has collectively raised tens of thousands of dollars for a range of charities including The Helen Hackett Foundation, AEIOU, Pyjama Foundation and Canteen.
So if you are up for a great day out in Bulimba this Friday 19th October, all in the name of charity – contact Shannon to buy your ticket: email shannon@eplace.com.au or call her on 07 3107 6931 or if you would like to learn more about YWCA’s Y Bloom program get in contact with Chelsea at info@yq.org.au
